Google Ads vs Local Services Ads for HVAC Companies

Search for AC repair and the top of the page usually shows two kinds of ad. Local Services Ads - the boxes with a business name, a rating and a verification badge - and ordinary Google Ads, which look more like search results. HVAC owners are often told to pick one. The better question is what each is good at, because they are built for different jobs.

How each one charges

Local Services Ads charge per lead. Google counts calls you answer, messages, booking requests and missed calls you return as leads, and the price varies by location, job type and how you bid. You pay whether or not the lead becomes a job, but you do not pay for someone who looks at your listing and moves on.

Google Ads charge per click. Someone clicks your ad, lands on your website, and you pay for that visit whether they call or not. That sounds worse, and for some searches it is - but it comes with control Local Services Ads do not offer, which matters a great deal for the most valuable HVAC work.

What changed recently

Two changes matter if you last looked at Local Services Ads a couple of years ago. Manual lead disputes were replaced in 2024 by automated credits: Google says leads it judges invalid or low quality are not charged, and charged leads may be credited automatically. Rating your leads in the dashboard feeds that process, so it is worth doing consistently.

And from October 20, 2025, Google replaced the Google Guaranteed, Google Screened and License Verified badges with a single Google Verified badge, showing which checks a business has passed. The money-back guarantee that came with the old Google Guaranteed badge was discontinued. If your marketing still mentions it, it is out of date.

Where Local Services Ads are strong

The limits are the other side of that simplicity. You choose job types and areas, not keywords. There is no landing page: your profile is the page, so reviews and responsiveness carry a lot of weight. And some leads are price-checkers or out-of-area callers, which the automated credits may or may not catch.

Where Google Ads are strong

System replacement is the job that decides an HVAC company's year, and it is sold on explanation: options, efficiency, financing, an in-home assessment. Google Ads let you bid on exactly those searches, write ads for them, and send the click to a page built to answer them. Local Services Ads cannot do that.

The cost is management. A Google Ads account left alone drifts: irrelevant searches creep in, budgets run out at the wrong times, and landing pages go stale. It needs someone watching it, whether that is you, a staff member or an agency - and a website worth sending clicks to. That is the work behind our Google Ads for HVAC companies.

How to decide

There is no universal answer, and anyone who says one channel always wins is selling something. A reasonable way to think about it:

An owner with a few spare hours a week can run Local Services Ads well: answer quickly, rate leads, ask every customer for a review. Google Ads is where outside help tends to pay for itself or not, depending on how much replacement work is at stake.

Compare them fairly

The common mistake is comparing cost per lead from one with cost per click from the other. They are not the same unit. The only fair comparison is cost per booked job - which means knowing which calls came from where, and which of them booked. Call tracking and a simple record of outcomes are enough to start.

Compare over a full season, too. Summer and winter peaks change both channels' costs and lead quality, and a month-long test in shoulder season tells you little about July. If you want the whole picture, including organic and referrals, our HVAC marketing and HVAC lead generation pages set out how we measure it.

Frequently asked questions

Are Local Services Ads cheaper than Google Ads for HVAC?
Sometimes, for emergency repair leads. But the fair comparison is cost per booked job, not cost per lead against cost per click. Local Services Ads leads include price-checkers, and Google Ads clicks include people who never call, so measure both through to booked work.
Can we still dispute bad Local Services Ads leads?
Not manually, since 2024. Google now credits leads it judges invalid or low quality automatically. Rating your leads consistently in the dashboard feeds that process, so it is worth doing for every lead.
What happened to the Google Guaranteed badge?
From October 20, 2025, Google replaced it and the other Local Services Ads badges with a single Google Verified badge, and discontinued the money-back guarantee. Eligible existing advertisers moved to the new badge automatically.
Should an HVAC company run both?
Most established ones benefit from both: Local Services Ads for emergency repair calls, Google Ads for replacement and installation searches where landing pages and keyword control matter. Smaller companies can start with Local Services Ads and add Google Ads when replacement work is the goal.
