Let's TalkThree map results decide the emergency call, and which three you see depends on where the phone is standing.
Give us your profile and your service area. We come back with where you appear in the map across a grid of your territory, what is wrong or missing on the profile, how your review profile compares to the businesses outranking you, and the three things worth doing first. Recorded walkthrough, no call required.
Four failures we see repeatedly in this vertical, and what each one actually costs.
Map results shift with the searcher's physical position, sometimes within a few streets. Checking from your own premises shows the single most flattering result available to you and tells you nothing about how you appear across the territory you actually serve. Almost every contractor we audit is materially weaker two suburbs out than they believe.
The primary category is the single strongest lever on what a profile ranks for, and most were set at creation by whoever made the listing. HVAC businesses routinely sit on a generic contractor category while competitors use the specific one, and the effect on map visibility is larger than anything on the website.
Recency matters, and HVAC review generation is almost always incidental - a technician remembering to ask. That produces a spike in July and nothing in March. A competitor with steady monthly reviews looks more current and more active, and in a trade where trust is the barrier, that gap is visible to the customer as well as to the algorithm.
Coverage is set once as a distance from the yard, which includes territory you decline and excludes places you happily serve. It also does nothing for visibility in the outer areas, because a profile without a physical presence there is competing against businesses that have one. The response is a strategy rather than a bigger radius.
Business outcomes rather than dashboard metrics. None of these is a guaranteed number - where we do guarantee something, it is written into the offer above.
The real deliverables, not a list written to make a proposal look thicker.
Not the general agency pitch. The reasons that only apply to this kind of business.
A single ranking check from your premises is the most flattering number available and the least useful. Grid measurement across the territory usually shows a much weaker picture, which is an uncomfortable first report and the only one that tells you where the work is.
The primary category outranks almost every other lever on a profile, and it is frequently wrong because it was chosen once at setup. It is a ten-minute change that regularly outperforms a quarter of content work, and it is not the sort of finding that justifies a large engagement.
Asking depends on a technician remembering at the end of a hot day, which is why HVAC review profiles are seasonal. Making the request part of job completion rather than an act of goodwill is process work rather than marketing, and it changes both ranking and conversion.
Map position sampled across the service area so the real picture replaces the office-window view.
Categories first, then services, attributes and hours. The highest-leverage and least glamorous work on the list.
Name, address and phone consistent across the directories that actually feed local results.
Prompted at completion, responded to consistently, measured monthly rather than left to chance.
Deliberate handling of territory without a physical presence, instead of widening a radius that does nothing.
Posts, photos, hours accuracy and grid position tracked over time rather than set once.
The parts of this that come from having run it in this industry before rather than from running it well in general.
Demand spikes on the days offices are closed, and a profile showing closed hours during a heatwave weekend sends the call to whoever appears open. It is a five-minute administrative task with a direct revenue consequence, and it is missed constantly.
A profile whose most recent review is eight months old reads as a business that has gone quiet, regardless of how good the reviews are. In a trade with a hard seasonal rhythm, deliberately generating reviews in the shoulder months keeps the listing looking current when competitors go dormant.
Profile photos showing real equipment, real vans and real technicians in recognisable local settings do more than any stock image, and they accumulate. Most HVAC profiles have four photos uploaded at setup and nothing since.
Distance from the searcher is weighted heavily and cannot be edited, so visibility in outer territory has to be earned through relevance and prominence instead - category precision, review strength and service definition. Understanding that stops contractors spending money trying to solve geography.
The closest engagement we can show is a multi-location service network rather than an HVAC contractor, and none of our case studies is a local SEO engagement - we will state that rather than let a paid result imply map performance. Its relevance is multi-location visibility management, which is the same discipline as managing profile presence and review flow across a service area with several depots.
Read the full case studyThey are different systems. Organic ranking follows the site; map ranking follows the profile, the reviews, the citation base and the searcher's distance from you. A strong website contributes but does not substitute, which is why contractors with good organic visibility routinely find themselves absent from the three results that actually get the emergency call.
Not by widening the service area radius, which does very little. Proximity is weighted heavily and cannot be edited, so visibility further out has to come from relevance and prominence - precise categories, a strong and recent review profile, and clearly defined services. In genuinely distant territory a real presence is sometimes the only answer, and we will say so rather than sell a fix that does not exist.
Steadily more than the businesses currently outranking you, with recency mattering as much as count. A profile with two hundred reviews and nothing in the last six months reads as a business that has gone quiet. The useful target is a consistent monthly flow through the shoulder seasons rather than a number, which is where most HVAC profiles fail.
It is the strongest single lever on the profile. Most HVAC listings were set up once with whatever category seemed reasonable, frequently a generic contractor option while competitors use the specific one. Correcting it takes minutes and regularly moves map visibility more than a quarter of website work does.
Yes, including the bad ones, and especially the bad ones. Response rate is visible to customers deciding between three map results, and a calm, specific reply to a complaint frequently persuades more than the complaint discourages. Silence beneath a negative review is read as agreement with it.
The consistency matters more than the volume. Conflicting names, addresses or phone numbers across directories undermine the confidence the profile is judged on, and cleaning that up is worthwhile. Buying hundreds of low-quality listings is not - that was a tactic for a different era and it does nothing now.
This is one part of a bigger service. Here is the whole of it, and the closest neighbours.
